This summer the 21CC Pyrotechnics production team have been busy coordinating, designing and producing special effects and stage pyrotechnics to light up scene for a number of concerts, gigs and parties – including Rihanna’s UK show piece and Runrig’s 40th Anniversary celebration concert.
Working with the artists’ production teams, the 21CC stage pyrotechnics Production Manager, Nick Barrass, says
“it is always a lot of fun putting together pyrotechnics splashes for these large events. Every show is different and every effect we design is unique and produced to suit the song or set piece that the effect is needed for. This summer we have been putting together live flame effects, fire falls, multiple mines chases, comets and percussion effects – all to the music and fired on cue.”
Months of planning go into these events to get the details just right and to ensure that the appropriate safety parameters are in place – but even with the best of plans in place, changes can occur – even at the last minute.
Display Manager, George King says,
“It is not uncommon for our cues to change in the lead up to a show. That is the nature of working with stage pyrotechnics on live events. Our team work closely with the artist’s stage team pre event and on the day to communicate cues and changes, sometimes as the show progresses. When bands are involved, if they are not working to a backing track, they can choose to extend instrumental bridges in their songs and change their endings. It is things like this that keeps us on our toes. We love it!”
At Rihanna’s gig, the crowd were treated to a sky filling extravaganza to conclude her final set, which included hundreds of thousands of glittering silver stars following her performance of ‘Diamonds’. The audience at Runrig’s 40th anniversary concert enjoyed an array of coloured mines chases creating thistles across the top of the stage and large comet arrays during their Loch Lomond performance to conclude their stage pyrotechnics set piece.
